Organized in 1953, the club is known to our friends and neighbors simply as the Indian Village Women’s Garden Club.

The homes in Indian Village have always had lovely gardens, many of which were originally designed by landscape architects. By the 1950s, numerous owners were doing their own gardening. It became apparent that technical help was needed with the gardens inherited from previous generations. A key group of women decided to form a garden club; members could learn the basics needed from professional presentations at meetings and from each other. Soon social activities and projects to beautify the neighborhood began to appear on the club calendar and deep friendships developed.

The club hosts evening meetings to accommodate our many working members and enthusiastically welcomes new members.

OUR MISSION

The Indian Village Women’s Garden Club is dedicated to the support of the Indian Village community through conservation, horticulture and civic improvement programs.  We are committed to fostering community spirit and capitalizing on the synergy of diverse groups of people in our neighborhood.

MAJOR COMMUNITY PROJECTS

Indian Village Home & Garden Tour:  Originally, the home tour in Indian Village was a yearly event planned and executed by the Women’s Garden Club.   The responsibilities, however,  for today’s more elaborate event are shared between the Women’s and Men’s Garden Clubs and the Historic Indian Village Association. Date announced for 2012: June 9th!

The Christmas Walk: Each year in December, the Women’s Garden Club hosts a holiday walk through five homes in Indian Village.  Each is decorated for the season and full of holiday cheer.  Ticket sales are limited to 140. Please click here for more information.

The Indian Village Centennial Garden and the Village Tree Planting: A beautiful  community garden graces Seminole at Charlevoix; trees are continually being planted on village streets to replace those that die. The Women’s Club financially supports these two worthwhile projects along with Indian Village Men’s Garden Club, which manages the projects.

The Artelia Bowne Court Scholarship Fund:  The Artelia Bowne Scholarship was established in 1983 to help local students complete their undergraduate education. Each spring, scholarships are awarded to a number of deserving college students. Named for a revered past member of the club, the fund has awarded $100,00.00 over 28years.    The Indian Village Woman’s Garden Club has joined hands with our community to make an important contribution to our neighborhood and city.  We believe education is an investment in our future.  Funds for the scholarships are derived the annual Christmas Walk and from a small percentage of the Waldorf Auction.
