10/1/18 (Monday) — 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. — Villages security meeting at Iroquois Avenue Christ Lutheran Church, covering Indian Village, West Village, Berry Sub and other Villages neighborhoods.

10/1/18 (Monday) — 7 p.m. — IVA block captains’ meeting at the Iroquois Avenue Christ Lutheran Church.

10/1/18 (Monday) — 7 p.m. — IVA board meeting at the Iroquois Avenue Christ Lutheran Church. Public forum issues will be discussed at 8 p.m.

10/2/18 (Tuesday) — 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. — Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church’s Tutoring TREE program at the church. Adult volunteers work one-on-one at the church with Nichols School students in the second through fifth grades, helping them improve their math and reading skills. Snack, art and gym activities also are part of the weekly program.

10/5/18 (Friday) — GFL Environmental will pick up trash, bulk waste, yard waste and recyclables.

10/9/18 (Tuesday) — 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. — Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church’s Tutoring TREE program at the church. Adult volunteers work one-on-one at the church with Nichols School students in the second through fifth grades, helping them improve their math and reading skills. Snack, art and gym activities also are part of the weekly program.

10/11/18 (Thursday) — 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. — Taste of Waldorf Tour at Detroit Waldorf School. The program for adults gives participants a chance to visit pre-kindergarten through eighth grade classrooms and learn more about the grades and subject matter.

10/12/18 (Friday) — GFL Environmental will pick up trash.

10/12/18 (Friday) — 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. — Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church invites its neighbors to a free Community Movie Night at the church. The event includes popcorn, snacks and beverages and a child-friendly movie for the whole family.

10/13/18 (Saturday) — 10 a.m. to 12 noon — Iroquois Avenue Christ Lutheran Church invites everyone to drop off gently used clothing, shoes, towels and bedding for the church’s clothes closet, the proceeds of which are sorted and distributed to area residents. Men’s women’s and children’s clothes are needed; toiletries, including travel samples, also are welcomed.

10/18/18 (Thursday) — 6 p.m. — Indian Village Association (IVA) annual meeting at Iroquois Avenue Christ Lutheran Church. At 6 p.m., the Woman’s Garden Club will host its annual pizza and bake sale. Pizza, salad, desserts and drinks will be available for purchase. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. and is open to all dues-paying members.

10/19/18 (Friday) — GFL Environmental will pick up trash, bulk waste, yard waste and recyclables.

10/21/18 (Sunday) — 7 a.m. to 12 noon — The 41st Detroit marathon, sponsored by the Detroit Free Press and Chemical Bank, will include Indian Village in the race course again this year. A water station will be set up on Seminole between Lafayette and Agnes and volunteers are needed.

10/23/18 (Tuesday) — 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. — Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church’s Tutoring TREE program at the church. 10/24/18 (Wednesday) — 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. — In partnership with the American Red Cross, Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church will host its semi-annual blood drive at the church. Donors are eligible to donate if they have not donated to another facility since August 29.

10/25/18 (Thursday) — Deadline for Smoke Signals articles.

10/28/18 (Sunday) — 4:30 p.m. — Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church invites everyone to the second concert in its 2018-2019 free JAZZ at JAPC series in the church’s sanctuary. This month, the nationally-acclaimed clarinet virtuoso and Grosse Pointe native Dave Bennett will perform with Pete Siers and Tad Weed.
