10/1/21 (Friday) — GFL Environmental will pick up trash, bulk waste, recyclables and yard waste.

10/1/21 (Friday) — 11 a.m. to 12 noon — In partnership with Make Food Not Waste (MFNW), Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church will be distributing food for those who need it. MFNW will be preparing carry-out dinners and the church will be giving out bags of dry pantry goods along with some fresh grocery items.

10/4/21 (Monday) — 6 p.m. — Villages security meeting covering Indian Village, West Village, Berry Sub and other Villages neighborhoods will be conducted via Zoom.

10/5/21 (Tuesday) — 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. — Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church’s Tutoring TREE program at the church. Adult volunteers are needed to work with two Nichols School students per adult in the second through fifth grades, helping them improve their math and reading skills. Volunteers also are needed to help with office and food activities in the church and crossing guard activities at the Burns walkway. The church is limiting the number of students, keeping tables at a distance and requiring masks to help keep students and adults safe.

10/17/21 (Sunday) — 7 a.m. — After a virtual race in 2020, the Detroit Free Press marathon returns to the streets of Detroit this year and will include West Village and Indian Village in the race course. Participants on this year’s route will arrive in Indian Village from East Lafayette, turn left onto Seminole, turn right onto Goethe, turn right onto Burns and exit Indian Village by turning right onto Jefferson Avenue. Historically, the first participants begin arriving between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. and cross streets along Seminole and Burns are barricaded to prevent vehicular traffic from impacting the route. If residents along the race course need to use their vehicles that morning, they should move them away from the course before 6 a.m.

10/21/21 (Thursday) — 7 p.m. — Due to COVID-19, the Indian Village Association (IVA) annual meeting will be held over Zoom. The IVA Board of Directors will present a yearly report and candidates seeking a seat on the board will be given 2 minutes to speak.

10/23/21 (Saturday) — 10 a.m. to 12 noon — Indian Village Association (IVA) in-person gathering at Centennial Garden. IV neighbors are invited to speak with members of the IVA Board of Directors at this outdoor gathering. All Indian Village residents are strongly encouraged to pay their dues for the 2022 calendar year before this meeting, using the form included in the Indian Village Newsletter. Neighbors also will be able to pay in person by cash, check or PayPal swipe reader. Dues-paying members will be eligible to vote for new members of the IVA Board of Directors. Results will be announced in the November newsletter.

10/24/21 (Sunday) — 4:30 p.m. — Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church invites its neighbors to the church’s second free jazz program in its 2021-2022 jazz series. This month, jazz vocalist Kate Patterson joins drummer Djallo Djakate, pianist Scott Gwinnell, bass player Trevor Lamb, trumpeter Dave Paltrow, trombonist Ron Kischuk and vocalist Marvin Jones for a performance in the church sanctuary. Safe distance seating will be marked. Masks are encouraged and available for all guests. Parking is available in the church parking lot.
