Calendar of Events

10/1/17 (Sunday) — 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. — Iroquois Avenue Christ Lutheran Church invites everyone to its annual Family & Friends Day on the front lawn of the church. The event includes worship and music, a potluck lunch with barbecue ribs and side dishes, and horseback rides for young and old. Call the church at 921-2667 for more information.

10/1/17 (Sunday) — 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. — The Indian Village Historic Collections invites everyone to purchase a drink at the West Village Biergarten to help raise funds to reactivate Mollicone Park at the corner of Burns and Goethe.

Adult volunteers work one-on-one at the church with Nichols School students in the second through fifth grades, helping them improve their math and reading skills. Snack, art and gym activities also are part of the weekly program.

10/4/17 (Wednesday) — 7 p.m. — West Village Association monthly meeting at the Metro Central Church of Christ, 1511 Van Dyke.

10/5/17 (Thursday) — 1:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. — Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church will host a blood drive at the church. Persons are eligible to donate at JAPC if they have not given to another facility after July 27. Volunteers also are needed to help with the drive throughout the day.

10/6/17 (Friday) — GFL Environmental will pick up trash, bulk waste, recyclables and yard waste.

10/14/17 (Saturday) — 10 a.m. to 12 noon — Iroquois Avenue Christ Lutheran Church invites everyone to drop off gently used clothing, shoes, towels and bedding for the church’s clothes closet, the proceeds of which are sorted and distributed to area residents. Men’s women’s and children’s clothes are needed; toiletries, including travel samples, also are welcomed.

10/14/17 (Saturday) — 11 a.m. — Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church will host its annual Blessing of the Animals on the church’s terrace. All animals should be on leashes or in carrying containers. Following the blessing, there will be refreshments for both two-legged and four-legged participants.

10/15/17 (Sunday) — 7:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. — The 40th Detroit marathon, sponsored by the Detroit Free Press and Chemical Bank, will include Indian Village in the race course again this year. A water station will be set up on Seminole between Lafayette and Agnes and volunteers are needed.

10/29/17 (Sunday) — 4:30 p.m. — Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church invites everyone to the second concert of its 2017-2018 free JAZZ at JAPC series in the church’s sanctuary. This month, Marion Hayden’s quartet will perform. Known as part of the great Detroit jazz bass legacy, Hayden also is becoming one of the more enduring instrumentalists in the mid-western United States.
